Yeah, it's not everyone's cup of tea! You definitely need an inner librarian-geek to do an index well.

Nice to be missed :) Been working, working, working - now I'm writing, writing, writing. Actually it seems it'll be the first writing I don't publish myself, which will be an interesting change. But having a grounding in self-publishing is always a bonus. I have zero anxiety about how things will go with the publisher - partly because the publisher is an old friend, but partly because self-publishing is something I'm very comfortable with and would always resort to if necessary.

Good point, Gyrus.

I know a lot of authors who do their own indexes -- even for traditionally published books. As I said, I was advised not to do my own, and I took the tip to heart. Maybe I was also afraid of messing it up. I don't know.

Thanks for your thoughts, man. You've been missed.

All good points! I agree with you about the necessity of an index for non-fiction, but I'm not sure about the necessity of getting someone else to do it. Just as being ultra-close to the content is the reason to get someone else to check the copy, I think it's the reason to do the index yourself. Depends on your own proclivities I guess, but I found that knowing the text inside out means you can be much more discerning and accurate about what does and what doesn't deserve to be indexed, and about the "fuzzy" index entries that aren't just about mechanically recording the occurrence of a certain word on a certain page.
